Robert E. Palmer is a partner in Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher's Orange County office. Mr. Palmer joined the firm in 1984 after earning a law degree magna cum laude from Pepperdine University School of Law, and serving as the Editor-in-Chief of the Pepperdine Law Review.  He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Nebraska in 1978.

Mr. Palmer's practice is primarily dedicated to business litigation, with an emphasis on complex litigation, especially in the areas of securities class actions, derivative actions, and internal and governmental investigations.  Mr. Palmer has substantial pre-trial and trial experience.  His clients include or have included First American Corporation, Fluor Corporation, Edison Mission Energy, Bally Technologies, Inc., 3M, Samsung Electronics Company, Toshiba America Information Systems, Inc., AST Research, Inc., Fleetwood Enterprises, Spar Aerospace, Edison International, Apria Healthcare Group Inc., ITT Educational Services, Inc., The Blackstone Group, Johnny Rockets, Inc., Roth Capital Partners, Mossimo, Inc., Quidel Corporation, Silicon Power Corporation, and Outdoor Systems, Inc.

Mr. Palmer has represented clients in a wide spectrum of different industries, including industrial and residential construction, multiple aspects of power generation, electronics, insurance, title insurance, data providers, computer hardware, software, health care, real estate, for profit educational providers, the gaming industry, clothing design and manufacturing, outdoor advertising, space and aerospace, airlines, oil and gas, transportation, accounting, and equipment manufacturing.

Representative major matters Mr. Palmer has handled include:
  • First American Corporation – Representation of First American in a host of matters, including nation-wide class actions and derivative claims in the state and federal courts, stock option back dating issues, anti-trust litigation, SEC inquiries, business litigation, and various other matters.
  • Edison Mission Energy – Representation of Edison Mission Energy, one of the nation's largest independent power providers, in a series of matters throughout the Country, including a $1.2 billion dollar action in Northern California, a $400 million action in Chicago, a large geothermal plant series of lawsuits, multiple disputes with public utilities and power plant related matters, regulatory issues, and multiple other matters.
  • Fluor Corporation – Representation of Fluor in a host of matters for over two decades, including successfully trying to verdict a possibly billion dollar plus lawsuit over environmental liability issues, defending Fluor in a multibillion dollar claim allegedly brought by Apartheid victims in South Africa, defended Fluor in various power plant litigation, defended Fluor in a $20 million concert hall construction dispute, assisted the company in various government and internal investigations, successfully prosecuted a trade secret action against former employees and competitors, obtained a multi-million dollar settlement in a high tech data provider dispute, handled multiple class actions and related matters in the New York state and federal courts, and a host of other matters.
  • Samsung Electronics Company – Representation of Samsung in twelve securities class actions in the Delaware and California courts arising out of its acquisition of AST Research, Inc.
  • Apria Healthcare Group Inc. – Representation of Apria in a series of federal court securities class actions as well as a host of other matters.
  • Fleetwood Enterprises – Representation of Fleetwood in a Delaware class action arising out of its acquisition of HomeUSA, Inc.
  • Cruttenden Roth, Inc./Roth Capital – Representation of Roth in multiple securities class actions relating to its role as an underwriter for various companies in governmental inquiries, and a host of other matters.
  • 3M:  Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company – Representation of 3M in a series of outdoor advertising and antitrust related lawsuits and other matters.  Also handled other matters in the industry for Outdoor Systems, Inc. and other outdoor advertising companies.
  • Prosoft I-Net Solutions, Inc. – Representation of Prosoft in multiple securities class actions relating to its public disclosure and methods of revenue recognition.
  • Spar Aerospace – Representation of Spar, formerly Canada's largest aerospace company, in disputes involving a revolutionary design for space reflector technology, actions against former employees, aircraft refurbishment and other matters.
  • The Irvine Company – Representation of The Irvine Company in a host of matters for over a decade, including a massive class action and B&P 17200 claims, serving as the Company's outside counsel on various intellectual property matters, representing the company in multiple housing construction related claims, and various other matters.
  • Farmers Insurance Group of Companies – Representation of Farmers, principally as a member of a four-lawyer trial team, in a $5 billion hostile takeover battle, including eight back-to-back trials in eight states and a congressional hearing, as well as multiple injunction battles in the state and federal courts.
  •  ITT Educational Services, Inc. -- Representation of ITT Educational Services, Inc., one of the nations largest "for-profit" educational institutions, in a series of securities class actions, SEC investigations, derivative claims, and other matters.
  • The Special Committee of The William Lyon Homes Company – Representation of the Company's Special Committee in both California and Delaware litigation relating to a transaction to take the Company private.
  • Bally Technologies, Inc. -- Representation of Bally in a series of securities class actions and derivative claims in the Nevada state and federal courts, a related SEC investigation, and various other matters.
  • Toshiba America Information Systems, Inc. -- Representation of TAIS in multiple matters, including IP matters, contract claims, and other litigation.
  • Outdoor Systems, Inc. – Representation of company in various billboard related litigation.
  • Quidel Corporation -- Representation of Quidel in various litigation matters, including patent, licensing, and intellectual property matters as well as various product-related matters.
  • Silicon Power Corporation/Crydon -- Representation of the company for over two decades in both domestic and foreign litigation as well as two large scale asset sales.

Mr. Palmer has been named a "Super Lawyer" by Los Angeles magazine in 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008; previously profiled in the Los Angeles Daily Journal; included in the "Best Lawyers in America"; listed in various "Who's Who" publications as one of America's top lawyers; and  is a frequent speaker and lecturer for the Federal Bar Association, the Continuing Education for the Bar (CEB), the Orange County Bar Association, Lorman Educational Seminars, the Association of Business Trial Lawyers, and other groups.  He was also a contributing author to The Rutter Group's Civil Trials and Evidence California Practice Guide and PLI's Securities Litigation Handbook.

Mr. Palmer is active in the local community, serving as Chair of Board Development and a member of the Board of Directors for the United Way, the Co-Chair of the Orange County Alexis de Tocqueville Society, and the former Chair of the Bench & Bar program.  He also serves of the Board of Directors for the South Coast Repertory Theater.  Mr. Palmer has also served on the Board of Project Tomorrow, an educational based local charity.  Mr. Palmer is also a past President of the Association of Business Trial Lawyers, Orange County Chapter; a past President of the Federal Bar Association, Orange County Chapter; the former Chair of the Orange County Bar Association Judiciary Committee; a Board member of the Orange County Bar Association; and a past President of the Constitutional Rights Foundation.  He also served as a Volunteer Deputy District Attorney and prosecuted cases for both the Los Angeles and Orange County District Attorney's offices and has donated substantial time to and received awards from the Public Law Center. 

Mr. Palmer is admitted to practice in the State of California and before the U.S. Supreme Court and multiple federal courts.
