The Guardianship Saturday program pairs Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher attorneys and
staff with the families of mentally-disabled individuals in need of legal
assistance. The program was designed to assist the Association for the Help of
Retarded Children (AHRC) provide representation to families seeking to obtain
guardianship of a mentally-disabled family member after they reach the age of
independence.
Over the past three years, Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher and AHRC have twice hosted
Guardianship Saturday, a day-long event during which attorneys and staff meet
with their new clients at our New York office to begin the process of obtaining
legal guardianship. Over the following months, Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher
attorneys and staff shepherd these families through the guardianship process by
creating a sound plan for current and future guardianship rights, obtaining
medical certification of the loved one’s disabilities, and often appearing in
Surrogate’s Court to address any opposition and finalize the process. Attorneys
and staff have also volunteered to take on guardianship matters at other points
during the year, transforming the Guardianship Saturday event into a year-long
program. Through its support of the Guardianship Saturday program, Gibson, Dunn
& Crutcher provides an invaluable service to families wishing to provide comfort
and support for their loved ones long into the future.
