In an increasingly global landscape, we understand that it is crucial that we incorporate diverse competencies, experiences and viewpoints into our workforce. At law schools across the country, we encourage diverse law students to pursue a career at Gibson Dunn. During the fall of 2016 and spring of 2017, we held over 108 on-campus events for diverse law students and recruits. We are actively involved and engaged in these events, with lawyers engaged in activities such as participating on panels, conducting mock interviews, serving as mentors, and attending dinners. We also provide annual financial support for diverse law student groups through a variety of programs.
We provide hiring opportunities to students with a commitment to diversity through our 1L hiring program. The first-year summer associates in the diversity program receive the same compensation and treatment as our second-year law students in the program. Gibson Dunn also participates in the 1L Leadership Council on Legal Diversity Scholars Program, and sends several of our summer associates each June to LCLD's Scholars Retreat. The Firm also hires an incoming law student through the Sponsors for Educational Opportunity Internship Program. These activities are an important part of our effort to recruit a diverse summer class that will in turn create a diverse first-year associate class after graduation.
Gibson Dunn understands that choosing a firm can be a difficult decision, and it is important to many law students that the one they choose supports diversity. Some may have questions that specifically pertain to what it is like to be a diverse lawyer at the firm, and all Gibson Dunn summer associates are given a chance to learn more about our diversity efforts. Each local diversity committee hosts various events for summer associates to answer diversity-related questions and our diverse summer associates are given ample opportunities to learn more about the experiences of diverse lawyers at Gibson Dunn. We are also making efforts to attract talented diverse lateral candidates.
