Biography

​Charlie Geffen is an English qualified lawyer based in the London office of Gibson, Dunn and Crutcher.  He is Chair of the London Corporate Practice and is Co-Chair of the firm’s Private Equity Practice Group.

Mr. Geffen has over 30 years' experience advising on a wide range of corporate matters including in particular cross border M&A, Private Equity, Governance and Corporate Finance and has previously represented many of the leading English and US private equity houses and large corporates on their most significant transactions. 

Mr Geffen is recommended by Chambers Global for Corporate/M&A and by Chambers Europe and Chambers UK for Corporate/M&A High End Capability. He is described as "the person you call when you need balance and checks on things at the very highest level of your organisation." Mr. Geffen is also named by Chambers UK as an Eminent Practitioner for Private Equity:Buyouts. Chambers described him as "impressive and charismatic", "brings a wealth of experience to the team" and praises him for the strength of his technical expertise. The Legal 500 UK 2017 recognizes Mr. Geffen for both M&A: Upper Mid-Market and Premium Deals and Private Equity: Transactions.  Best Lawyers International recommend Mr. Geffen in the field of private equity (2009-2018).

Prior to joining Gibson Dunn Mr. Geffen was the Senior Partner of Ashurst for five years until 2013, leading the firm through transformative change prior to which he led the firm's market leading private equity practice. He qualified there in 1984 becoming a partner in 1991. 

Representative transactions prior to becoming Senior Partner at Ashurst include advising Rusal on its relationship with Norilsk Nickel, Blackstone and Merlin Entertainments on their creation of the second largest visitor attraction business in the world, Santander on its acquisition of the building society Bradford & Bingley at the height of the financial crisis, Cinven and Candover on their acquisition of Gala Coral and numerous other transactions for Cinven, Apax, Blackstone and other sponsors and corporates.  Representative transactions since joining Gibson Dunn include advising the founder shareholders on the IPO of Sophos plc, Towers Watson on its $8bn merger with Willis and Terra Firma on its $1.2bn sale of Odeon and UCI Cinemas to AMC Entertainment.

He is a member of the Boards of The Institute of Cancer Research and City Year UK, an external adviser on Department of Education interview panels for free schools, a mentor for senior women with the FTSE 100 Mentoring Foundation and participates in Speakers for Schools.
