Terence P. ("Terry") Ross is a partner in the Washington, D.C. office of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher.  Since joining the firm in 1984, Mr. Ross has concentrated his practice on the litigation of commercial lawsuits, particularly those involving intellectual property, media and technology.  He has represented clients in numerous high-profile cases, particularly in the application of the intellectual property laws to the Internet and e-commerce.  He has broad experience in various types of intellectual property disputes, including patent and copyright infringement; trade secret and unfair competition litigation; and trademark/trade name disputes.  In particular, Mr. Ross represents a number of media companies and other content providers who publish (at least in part) on the Internet.

Mr. Ross' experience at both the trial and appellate levels is extensive.  He has had a principal role in several dozen jury or bench trials and arbitrations.  In addition, Mr. Ross has made oral arguments to the Supreme Court of Virginia, the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.

In 2002, Mr. Ross was selected by IP Worldwide Magazine as one of the seven best intellectual property litigators in the United States under the age of 45.  Washingtonian Magazine selected Mr. Ross as one of the "best lawyers" in the Washington, D.C. area in 2004 and 2007.  The Washington Legal Foundation, a public interest organization dedicated to furthering the principles of free enterprise, has described Mr. Ross as "one of the country's top lawyers."  And, the National Institute of Trial Advocacy has conferred on Mr. Ross its designation as a "Master Advocate."

In his almost twenty-five of practice with the firm, Mr. Ross has developed a reputation for aggressively handling significant cases that involving large potential damages or cutting-edge issues of law.  During his tenure with Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, Mr. Ross has managed staffs of lawyers and paralegals ranging from three to thirty with case budgets running up to $10 million per year.

Mr. Ross is admitted to practice law in the Commonwealth of Virginia, the District of Columbia and the State of New York.  He is also a member of numerous federal courts, including the Supreme Court of the United States and the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.  He has handled litigation in a wide variety of federal and state courts throughout the United States.

Mr. Ross graduated from Stanford University, with honors, in 1980.  In 1983, he graduated from the University of Virginia School of Law, where he was Research Editor and a member of the Managing Board of the Virginia Law Review.  Upon graduation, he clerked for Judge Roger Robb on the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.  Mr. Ross joined the firm shortly after concluding his clerkship.  Mr. Ross also has an M.A. in history from George Mason University.

Mr. Ross is active in many Bar Associations.  He speaks and writes regularly on a variety of intellectual property topics.  In particular, Mr. Ross chairs the DC Bar Association's Annual Developments in Intellectual Property Law Forum and is a former member of the steering committee of the American Bar Association's Intellectual Property Litigation Committee.  He is also an Adjunct Professor at George Mason University Law School where he teaches intellectual property.  Mr. Ross is the author of the leading treatise on intellectual property damages, Intellectual Property Law:  Damages and Remedies, published by Law Journal Press.
