Based in Los Angeles, New York or Washington, D.C., the Chief Well-Being Officer (CWO) is a C-level executive who is responsible for leading the comprehensive and holistic well-being strategy at the Firm.  The CWO will spearhead the firm-wide culture of well-being by collaborating with the C-Suite, lawyers, and staff, globally. The CWO will develop a comprehensive program to promote the professional, mental, personal, physical and financial well-being of each member of Gibson Dunn, as well as successfully embed the well-being ethos into the larger Firm strategy. The CWO will operate as a member of the Executive Team, reporting directly to the Managing Partner & COO, and will work closely with the Partner Chair of the Well-Being Committee, as well as the Well-Being Committee to craft strategic well-being initiatives that achieve significant and demonstrable benefits for the Firm’s global personnel.

Qualifications

  • Evaluate existing well-being programs for effectiveness and relevance and adjusting as needed. As well as create and develop extremely high quality, effective and relevant well-being policies, programs, and initiatives, built for a hybrid, global environment, for both attorneys and staff.
  • Collect and analyze post-programming data to support continuous improvement.
  • Identify innovative strategic well-being partnership opportunities.
  • Develop and effectively manage well-being budget and vendor relationships to ensure services are being delivered as expected.
  • Proactively monitor local and global well-being trends, and proactively respond to emerging well-being trends, to continuously achieve a platinum level service function for all Firm personnel.
  • This includes providing quarterly updates to firm management about the well-being initiatives of our key legal competitors and key clients, and benchmarking well-being programming across the legal industry.
  • Act as first point of contact for attorneys and staff to help facilitate and connect individuals with appropriate Firm personnel and/or departments, well-being professionals and resources, and outside support services to ensure that individuals faced with difficult and challenging situations are receiving the support they need.
  • Build consensus among all levels of Firm personnel around the efficacy of programming.
  • In conjunction with Executive Team, Partner Chair – Well-Being Committee and key firm stakeholders, CWO will establish key performance indicators/metrics and implement, monitor and report on key metrics around the efficacy of well-being program strategies.
  • Clearly communicate, build excitement and engagement for well-being programming.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with the Human Resources, Legal Recruiting, Professional Development, Diversity, and other teams on the design and implementation of well-being programs.
  • Active representation supporting the Firm’s position as signatory to the ABA Well-Being Pledge.
  • Mentor and formulate development plans for direct reports, which initially will include the Global Wellness Manager.

 

Knowledge, Skills & Attributes

A Chief Well-Being Officer must be a visionary, creative thinker, collaborator and influencer, as well as highly empathetic. Through these attributes, and in partnership with the Firm’s stakeholders, the CWO will be responsible for building stronger well-being focused coalitions and enhancing the Firm’s already proven commitment to the well-being of all Firm personnel.

Critical skills needed to perform this important role include:

  • Ability to build strong relationships with a wide range of people at all levels, with the confidence, credibility, and gravitas to collaborate effectively.
  • Superior oral and written communication skills, including excellent presentation skills, both via video communications platforms and in-person.
  • Strong analytical thinker who can identify trends and gaps within and across populations, and translate data into knowledge that promotes well-being with ability to pivot quickly when something is not working.
  • Ability to effectively engage key stakeholders and execute widespread promotion of the Firm-wide well-being strategy.

Experience

  • Degree in human resources or related field required with emphasis on employee well-being.
  • 10+ years of experience in human resources and/or well-being programs or related field a must. Plus experience in leading functions for a global law firm or professional services firm required.
  • Developing and administering department or similar budget.
  • Demonstrated record of effective engagement with diverse audiences, via impeccable oral and written presentation skills, setting strategic vision, and collaborative leadership in a global firm.

 Compensation & Benefits:

The annual compensation range for this position is $150 – 250k. The salary offered within this range will depend upon qualifications and other operational considerations. Benefits offered for this position include health care; retirement benefits; paid days off, including sick time, and vacation time; parental leave; basic life insurance; Flexible Spending Accounts; as well as discretionary, performance-based bonuses.
