Gibson Dunn Wins Asylum Case for Man from Togo

In April 2019, lawyers Fred Yarger, John Dwyer, Craig Streit, Peter Baumann, and Syamack Afshar from the Denver, San Francisco, and London offices won an asylum hearing on behalf of their client.  The client is a gay man from Togo who was nearly killed after being discovered with his romantic partner.  After fleeing his village and country, he eventually arrived in the United States.  The judge granted asylum on the spot; after the hearing, she even went out of her way to compliment the quality of the team’s briefing, saying that it “made [her] job easy” to grant asylum.  The client has been detained since late 2018 and will be released from detention shortly.
