Robert Phillips
(1971 – 2026)

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our partner and friend, Rob Phillips.

Rob was a partner in our San Francisco office, where his practice focused on advising life sciences, medical device, and technology companies. He joined Gibson Dunn in 2020 and served on the firm’s Hiring Committee. As a core member of the firm’s transactional Life Sciences Practice Group, he represented issuers and investors in the pharmaceutical sector—work driven by his deep commitment to advancing therapies that help patients. Rob was regarded as technically excellent, eminently pragmatic, and deeply warm. His humor and kindness made him beloved by colleagues and opposing counsel alike.

A proud double Hoya, Rob graduated from Georgetown University with a Bachelor of Science in Foreign Service in 1994 and from Georgetown University Law Center with a Juris Doctor in 1999. A competitive swimmer in high school and throughout college, he held multiple backstroke records at Georgetown. Having lived in Japan during his formative years, Rob developed a profound appreciation for the country’s culture and became fluent in Japanese.

Rob was an extraordinary colleague and friend to our Gibson Dunn community. Our thoughts are with his family and with the many colleagues who worked with him. He will be greatly missed.
