Security Alert: Fraudulent Communications and Impersonation
Please be aware that unauthorized individuals may occasionally impersonate Gibson Dunn partners, other attorneys, employees, or representatives. These scammers often use our firm’s name, logo, and professional titles in an attempt to steal sensitive personal or financial information, misdirect funds, or otherwise get you to take certain actions.
Common Scam Tactics:
Scammers typically reach out via email, text, or social media and describe a scenario that is engineered to encourage you to act. These can include but are not limited to:
- Crypto Recovery: Offers to help you recover funds lost in cryptocurrency scams
- Urgent Invoices: Requests for payment on fake or “overdue” legal invoices
- Legal Threats: Claims of copyright infringement or pending litigation, often with embedded links claiming to reveal additional information or make a form available for download
- Settlement Offers: Promises of financial payouts requiring an upfront “processing fee” or the entry of personal information in a purported claim form
- Misdirect Funds: Late changes to wire instructions that use a different bank or bank account than the one originally given
How to Spot a Fake:
Gibson Dunn is not affiliated with these communications. You can identify a potential scam by looking for these red flags:
- Non-Firm Email Domains: Emails sent from addresses that do not end in “@gibsondunn.com” (e.g., @gmail.com, @outlook.com, or slightly misspelled variations of @gibsondunn.com)
- Non-Firm Website Domains: Websites that use the Gibson Dunn name or logo or include other references to our firm and/or attorneys but use a web address other than “gibsondunn.com”
- Unfamiliar Numbers: Calls or texts from, or websites or images that provide, phone numbers that don’t match those listed for our Firm or our attorneys on our official public website: Homepage – Gibson Dunn
- Fake Attorney Names: Websites or messaging app profiles that include photos of Gibson Dunn attorneys with names that do not match that Gibson Dunn attorney’s name on their “gibsondunn.com” bio page on our official public website
- Direct Messaging: We typically do not initiate official outreach via social media direct messages or encrypted messaging apps, such as WhatsApp or Telegram
Protect Yourself:
If you receive a suspicious message claiming to be from Gibson Dunn, please:
- Do not respond
- Do not click any links or download attachments
- Do not provide any personal or financial data
- Report such scammers to any relevant social media platform, and to the relevant police or government authorities in your jurisdiction (notably, the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation has issued an alert warning the public about scammers posing as fictitious law firms, and providing information regarding how to file a report with the FBI)
