Associate Ariana Sañudo has authored the Daily Journal’s [PDF] “When the Immigration Fellowship Pipeline Falters, Firms Can Help Rural Legal Aid Hold the Line.” She notes that the California Immigration Legal Fellowship’s lack of permanent statutory protection provides an opportunity for firms to help expand access to legal representation in underserved rural communities.

California Governor Gavin Newsom recently vetoed a bill that would codify the Immigration Legal Fellowship, which places newly admitted lawyers in “legal desert” regions of the state and pairs them with an experienced immigration law mentor.

“The veto left the fellowship alive but without a statutory anchor and without a clear tether to the most vulnerable residents of our state,” Ariana said. “Advocates will likely return to the Legislature, but in the meantime, the private bar can help supply lawyers, training and staying power where they are scarcest.”
