Texas Lawyer

In a wide-ranging interview with Texas Lawyer, partner Trey Cox, a former college football player who has become one of the most successful trial lawyers in the U.S., describes how he applies athletic principles and his inherently competitive nature to high-stakes litigation: by treating every case like a championship game, and by spending months preparing to ensure flawless execution. “What we are trying to do,” Trey says simply, “is provide a winning result for our client.”

Trey’s colleagues compare him to a championship coach because of his team-first approach — one that was rewarded with a record-breaking $667 million verdict for client Energy Transfer against Greenpeace, a case that the team spent over two years putting together.

It all comes down to team building, Trey says: “If you want to go fast, go by yourself. If you want to go far, take a group.”

Trey is Co-Chair of our global Litigation Practice Group and Co-Partner in Charge of our Dallas office. He is a finalist for Texas Lawyer’s 2025 Attorney of the Year award, which will be presented in Dallas on September 25.
