Gibson Dunn Successfully Defends Meta Platforms and Instagram in Lawsuit Related to Uvalde School Shooting

A Gibson Dunn team successfully defended Meta Platforms and Instagram in a lawsuit brought by families of victims of the 2022 mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, which alleged the perpetrator was exposed to third-party Instagram posts that glorified and normalized ownership of the specific firearm used in the attack. The court dismissed the claims, finding that the shooter was the proximate cause of the harm and that any conduct by Meta was “so far attenuated from plaintiffs’ harm that it is only negligible or theoretical.”

Our team was led by partners Kristin Linsley and Samuel Eckman and included associates Jamila MacEbong and Lindsay Laird.
