Eli Balsam is an associate in Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP’s New York office. He is a member of the firm’s Litigation department, where he focuses on intellectual property and technology-related cases.
Eli has litigated cases covering an array of products and technologies, including wearable devices, biometric authentication, encryption, web technology, network security, semiconductor and integrated circuit products, and mechanical devices. His experience spans pre-suit diligence, pleadings, contentions, claim construction, discovery, expert reports, taking and defending fact and expert depositions, dispositive motion practice, hearings, IPR proceedings, and Federal Circuit appeals. Eli also maintains an active pro bono practice. For example, he represented a Sing Sing Correctional Facility prisoner in a constitutional rights case in the Southern District of New York, securing a favorable settlement on the eve of trial.
Eli earned his J.D. from Harvard Law School in 2019 and his B.A., cum laude, in mathematics from Yeshiva University in 2016. During law school, Eli interned at the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, prepared an amicus brief in the U.S. Supreme Court with the American College of Trust & Estate Counsel, and represented prisoners in disciplinary and parole proceedings at the Prison Legal Assistance Project. Eli was also an Article Editor on the Harvard Environmental Law Review and a Team Captain and Oralist in the Ames Moot Court Competition.
Before joining the firm, Eli clerked for the Honorable Ralph K. Winter on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and litigated patent cases at Desmarais LLP. He is admitted to practice in the State of New York and before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.
