Jonathan Cockfield

Associate Attorney

Jonathan Cockfield is an English-qualified disputes associate and solicitor-advocate in Gibson Dunn’s London office. His practice focuses on complex commercial disputes, often with a transnational, multi-jurisdictional element. 

Jonathan has notable experience handling disputes relating to financial services, insurance, and insolvency. In addition, he has acted for clients in a range of other sectors including accountancy, technology, construction, energy, mining and sports.

His recent matters include:

  • Defending a listed wealth management firm in High Court claims involving complex allegations of fraud and intimidation relating to entities in the UK, India, Mauritius and the UAE.
  • Representing a major investment bank in High Court proceedings regarding antitrust violations relating to LIBOR manipulation. That dispute involved parallel proceedings in New York.
  • Acting for a major international contractor in a $4 billion ICC arbitration concerning an infrastructure project in the Middle East.
  • Bringing a $1.5 billion unlawful means conspiracy claim in the High Court for a multinational steel manufacturing conglomerate, with related proceedings in the Cayman Islands, New York, India and Mauritius.
  • Acting for a group of professional sportsmen in injunction and related disciplinary proceedings. This matter gave rise to antitrust, public law and restraint of trade issues, alongside related proceedings in New York and Florida.  
  • Obtaining of a freezing injunction and related relief from the High Court in connection with a $550 million ICC arbitration award arising out of a mining dispute.

Jonathan trained at Gibson Dunn, as part of the London office’s first-ever intake of trainees. He has spent time seconded to the in-house litigation teams of two clients of the firm: a major investment bank and a global insurance firm.

Prior to joining Gibson Dunn, Jonathan worked as an adviser to a government minister and as a visiting lecturer in law at King’s College London, where he taught the law of equity and trusts. He obtained his Master of Arts from the University of Oxford and his Master of Law from the University of Cambridge.
