Partner Trey Cox has authored The American Lawyer’s [PDF] “Apprenticeship Is Being Automated,” which details how the use of artificial intelligence is impacting the growth of younger lawyers. Trey argues that the traditional model of first-year lawyers poring over documents and drafting memos teaches attention to detail but not the judgment skills critical to future success: “Like it or not, the grind that we once considered indispensable to career development is not coming back, and not worth much grief. It may have given you an eye for detail, and it may have let everyone pretend that the experience had an educational purpose. What it never gave anyone was judgment, and that part is still available on the old terms. You have to stand up and earn it.”
