November 12, 2014

Washington, D.C.  Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP is pleased to announce that Gregory Merz has joined the Washington, D.C. office as of counsel.  Formerly a Managing Director & Deputy General Counsel with Legg Mason and most recently a Special Regulatory Counsel with Proskauer Rose, Merz will continue his regulatory and compliance practice at Gibson Dunn with a focus on the asset management industry.

In addition to serving in-house for eight years with Legg Mason, Merz was also with Fidelity Investments for over nine years.  Throughout his nearly 30-year career, Merz has counseled registered and private investment advisory firms on the application of Federal and state securities laws to their businesses.  He also has experience in negotiating corporate acquisitions, divestitures and restructurings, as well as in product development and government relations.

“We are thrilled to welcome Greg to the firm,” said C. William Thomas, Jr., D.C. corporate partner, who focuses his practice on the formation and operation of private investment funds.  “Greg is an industry veteran who will bring additional regulatory depth and experience to our already strong investment funds, SEC enforcement and financial institutions practices.  With the significantly increased focus on the investment management industry by regulators over the past several years, Greg will be a real asset to our clients who are navigating complex compliance and related issues.”

Merz graduated from the University of Chicago Law School in 1985.
