A.J. Frey is a partner in the Washington, D.C. office of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher. He is a member of the Investment Funds Practice Group.
Mr. Frey’s practice focuses on the formation and operation of private investment funds across a variety of fund strategies, including private equity, growth equity, venture capital and real asset funds. He has extensive experience representing the sponsors of these funds, as well as institutional investors, seed investors, family offices, placement agents and joint venture partners.
Mr. Frey advises sponsors on strategic secondary and other fund-related transactions, fund operations, and regulatory compliance. He also advises clients in relation to internal general partner dynamics and management company issues.
Additionally, Mr. Frey has broad experience in private equity and venture capital transactions, including equity financings, co-investments, leveraged buyouts and asset manager M&A.
Prior to joining Gibson Dunn, Mr. Frey served as General Counsel of Greenspring Associates, where he managed the legal function of a more than $13 billion AUM diversified venture capital platform across direct, secondary, fund-of-fund and bespoke investment strategies. He was previously an associate at Gibson Dunn in the Investment Funds Practice Group.
Mr. Frey has been recognized as “One to Watch” in the Private Client Global Elite, a directory of leading private client advisers published by Legal Week and The American Lawyer.
Mr. Frey graduated summa cum laude in 2012 from Washington and Lee University School of Law, where he received the John W. David Prize for Law for the highest cumulative grade point average, served as managing editor of the Washington and Lee Law Review, and was elected to the Order of the Coif. He earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Virginia in 2008.
