Today, the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit denied a motion to reconsider its historic ruling in Perry v. Brown, which found Proposition 8 unconstitutional. Proposition 8 rewrote the California Constitution to eliminate the right of same-sex couples to marry in the state.Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP represented the plaintiffs in the case and in defending against the motion for reconsideration.“Today, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals reaffirmed that gay and lesbian Americans are entitled to the same freedoms, equality, respect, and decency that all citizens value and cherish,” said Gibson Dunn partner Theodore B.

The San Francisco Business Times named San Francisco partner Mary Murphy to its annual list of the Most Influential Women in Bay Area Business. The list, which includes 150 women executives, recognizes those women “who have taken a leadership role in larger corporations, public, nonprofit and government agencies” and “are shaping Bay Area companies and communities.” The list was published in the April 27, 2012 issue.

The award is given to those law firms “that have innovative public-private partnerships that deliver justice in their communities.” Gibson Dunn was recognized for its work with the Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund. The award honors “true leaders in the legal community,” “who make outstanding contributions to the legal profession and to the community.” The award will be presented at the Anti-Defamation League’s Annual Jurisprudence Awards Dinner on May 8, 2012 in Newport Beach.

The New York State Bar Association honored Gibson Dunn with its 2012 President’s Pro Bono Service Award in the large law firm category. The New York office of Gibson Dunn was recognized for donating more than 37,000 hours of pro bono work in 2011 on a wide range of issues, such as good government projects, immigration, transgender advocacy, holocaust survivors and domestic violence. The award was presented at its annual Law Day luncheon on May 1, 2012.

The University of San Diego presented Theodore Boutrous with its Author E. Hughes Career Achievement Award at its annual alumni honors program on April 28, 2012. The award is given in recognition of “extraordinary accomplishments” of distinguished alumni and is presented annually to an alumnus/a from each of the five schools of the university. Boutrous received his law degree, summa cum laude, from the USD in 1987, where he was valedictorian and editor-in-chief of the San Diego Law Review.

The list features 50 California attorneys in their first 10 years out of law school “whose early accomplishments indicate they will be tomorrow’s top lawyers and leaders.” The Recorder selected attorneys based on their work, community involvement and leadership within their firms or practice communities. The Daily Journal has named partner Wayne Barsky to its 2012 list of the 75 Leading Intellectual Property Litigators. Attorneys are selected based on the impact their work has had on intellectual property law. Wayne was featured for his work representing Merck-Serono, Pfizer and EMD Serono in a patent infringement case involving a drug used in the treatment of multiple sclerosis, and for his work representing the Kennedy Institute in a patent case relating to the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis.
