Gibson Dunn’s pro bono work on behalf of immigrants and refugees over the last few months has been unprecedented in its scale and scope. The projects have ranged from emergency work by attorneys in the early hours after the first “Travel Ban” Executive Order was signed, to high-profile individual representations of immigrants facing deportation, to amicus briefs for dozens of firm clients advocating on behalf of core values, including a commitment to diversity.

On April 25, 2017, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit vacated the order of removal of Gibson Dunn pro bono client Daniel Castendet-Lewis, a native of Panama who was deported after pleading guilty to Virginia statutory burglary.

Gibson Dunn's Dubai office continues to be heavily involved in the Holy Trinity Church's Pro Bono Advice Clinic in Oud Metha, Dubai. The first of its kind in the region, the clinic offers individuals experiencing a broad range of legal problems the opportunity to obtain free legal advice from the clinic's volunteers.

This year, the team award is presented to lawyers in Gibson Dunn’s New York office for their work with the Urban Justice Center to reach a settlement with the Social Security Administration that will provide benefits to more than 4,000 indigent and disabled New Yorkers. The individual award is presented to New York associate Kate Driscoll for her involvement in an ongoing case aimed at preventing the unlawful closure of the Long Island
