PRACTICE

Privacy, Cybersecurity and Data Innovation Antitrust and Competition Class Actions Litigation

BIOGRAPHY

Matt Buongiorno is an associate in the Dallas office of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher. He is a member of the firm’s Litigation Department and practices in the Privacy, Cybersecurity and Data Innovation Practice Group.

His practice focuses on a variety of data privacy and consumer protection matters, with an emphasis on representing clients in the technology and internet industries in both litigation and government investigations contexts. He also has experience advising companies on privacy and cybersecurity issues—including relating to legal and regulatory compliance with state, federal, and international laws—as well as counseling on data breach response management and notification issues.

Matt also has extensive antitrust litigation and related government investigations experience. He has previously defended one of the world’s largest banks in large class actions involving alleged manipulation of U.S. Dollar LIBOR and other interest rate and financial derivative benchmarks (Euribor, Yen, LIBOR, ISDAFix) and alleged manipulation of foreign exchange (FX) benchmarks.

He has been recognized on the Best Lawyers: Ones to Watch® in America lists from 2022-2024 for Antitrust Law, Litigation – Antitrust, and Litigation – Banking and Finance.

Matt earned his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Texas School of Law, where he served as an articles editor for the Texas Review of Litigation and competed in a moot court and mock trial. He graduated valedictorian from Texas Christian University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science.

Before attending law school, Matt was a Herbert Scoville Jr. Peace Fellow with the Federation of American Scientists in Washington D.C. He then served as a Teach For America corps member on the Big Island of Hawaii where he taught high school math and comparative politics, and coached cross country and triathlon.

Outside of work, Matt is an avid and competitive triathlete. He has competed in over a dozen Ironman 70.3 triathlons—qualifying for the World Championship in 2018 and 2021—and three full Ironman triathlons.
