BIOGRAPHY

Sean Tierney is a Partner of the firm’s Real Estate Department where he represents private equity funds, institutional and non-institutional real estate investors, developers, operators, lenders and borrowers in negotiating and structuring real estate joint ventures, acquisitions, sales, developments and financings.  Sean has deep experience in representing hotel investors and operators in connection with the acquisition, financing, development, operation, and disposition of hospitality assets.

Mr. Tierney regularly handles complex financing transactions and has extensive experience negotiating loans for various developmental projects. In 2019, he helped his clients negotiate over $2.7 Billion worth of borrower-side financings, including loans from both balance sheet and CMBS lenders.

Selected matters include:

  • Representation of a buyer in the acquisition of a full-service luxury resort along the California coast valued at over $400 million
  • Representation of a resort owner in connection with the re-branding of its resort from a “boutique” hotel into a world-wide, 5-star brand
  • Representation of a borrower in connection with a preferred equity financing in connection with a renovation of a luxury hotel in Boston, MA
  • The sale of the former Hollywood Park site to the Los Angeles Rams ownership group for an undisclosed sum and the subsequent development work on what has become the site of the new Los Angeles Stadium in Inglewood, California
  • Representation of a capital partner in the joint venture, acquisition and financing of a $600+ million portfolio of medical office buildings located in multiple jurisdictions throughout the United States
  • Representation of an operating partner/developer in the joint venture, acquisition and financing of a mixed used development in San Francisco, CA
  • Representation of a buyer in the acquisition of a high-end apartment building in San Francisco valued at over $300 million
  • Representation of a lender in connection with a $115 million mortgage and mezzanine financing of a condominium project in Vail, CO
  • Representation of a buyer in the acquisition of a multi-property industrial portfolio
  • Representation of a capital partner in the joint venture, acquisition and financing of a multi-family housing portfolio located across three states
  • Representation of a senior lender in connection with a $73,000,000 construction financing for a hotel property in Dallas, TX
  • Representation of a seller in connection with its sale of a $280,000,000 office building in San Francisco, CA

Further, Super Lawyers has consistently recognized Sean Tierney as “Rising Star” for Real Estate, a distinction he has earned for each of the past 4 consecutive years. Most recently, he was recognized as a Best Lawyers: Ones to Watch in America™ 2022 and 2023 in Real Estate.

Mr. Tierney graduated cum laude from the University of Michigan Law School.  While at Michigan, he worked in the Community and Economic Development Clinic, advising small businesses and non-profit organizations dedicated to the economic revitalization of Detroit, Michigan.  Sean graduated magna cum laude from Loyola Marymount University where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Philosophy and a minor in Business Administration.

Sean is also a proud member of the Board of Directors of Verbum Dei High School, a college prep school for low-income students located in the Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles.
