PRACTICE

Antitrust and Competition Litigation

BIOGRAPHY

Georg Weidenbach is a partner in the Frankfurt office of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher. He is a member of the firm’s Antitrust and Competition and the Litigation Groups.

Georg focuses his practice on European and German antitrust law. He regularly advises clients on cartel investigations and related cartel damage claims, merger control, compliance programs and audits, antitrust related distribution and abuse of dominance matters.

Georg is regularly recommended by the leading legal publications. For example, JUVE Handbook 2022/2023 again included him in its list of the leading antitrust advisors in Germany under the age of 50; Handelsblatt / The Best Lawyers™ 2022/2023 list him among the best lawyers in Germany for Competition/Antitrust Law and elected him as antitrust lawyer of the year 2021/2022 in Germany; The Legal 500 Deutschland 2023 and The Legal 500 EMEA 2023 recognize Georg as “Leading Individuals” for Antitrust in Germany; Chambers Global 2023 and Chambers Europe 2023 rank him for Competition/European Law – Germany; Who’s Who Legal lists him as Global Leader as well as National Leader for Competition law; Kanzleimonitor 2022/2023 recommends Georg among the leading lawyers for antitrust in Germany; and WirtschaftsWoche recognized him as a Top Lawyer 2022 in Antitrust in Germany. Over the years, clients and other market participants described Georg in legal publications as “brilliant and bright,” “quick-witted,” “strategically smart,” “incredibly attentive, very perceptive, and detail-oriented,” “customer-oriented, innovative and always on top of recent developments and court rulings,” “one of the best young antitrust lawyers,” and “to the point and creative, with a short response time and comprehensive advise.” They also mentioned that “he is very structured, smart, hands-on and assertive, as well as being pleasant and very experienced”, “he presents arguments in a very understandable and easy to grasp way, and thus is very convincing in presenting a case” and “Georg Weidenbach is creative and really thinks out of the box, while being very comprehensive in his advice.” His “thoughtful approach” and that he “thinks outside the box in favor of the perfect strategy” is also acknowledged. Furthermore, Georg earned praise for his “skillful handling of sensitive issues,” his “deep knowledge and understanding in vertical antitrust law and sales conception questions” as well as his “good availability and fast feedback.” He is also praised for his “outstanding case development for purposes of risk-opportunity assessments” and for being a “creative thinker who is also willing to take gloves off in order to go on the offensive”. (Handelsblatt / The Best Lawyers™ 2018; Chambers Europe Germany 2015, 2016, 2022; Chambers Global 2021, 2022, 2023; The Legal 500 EMEA 2014 & 2016; JUVE Handbook 2016/2017, 2022/2023)

Georg regularly publishes on antitrust matters. Besides many articles, he recently co-edited a handbook on antitrust damage claims (Kartellrechtliche Schadensersatzklagen, 2018/2021, Frankfurt am Main) and authored chapters about antitrust compliance (Handbuch Compliance-Management, 3rd edition 2020, Berlin) and antitrust limits for commercial contracts (Münchener Vertragshandbuch, Vol. 2, Wirtschaftsrecht I, 8th edition 2020, Munich). He has also been teaching antitrust law at German universities, including the EBS Law School and the University of Münster.

Prior to joining Gibson Dunn, Georg was Deputy Office Managing Partner of the German offices of a renowned US law firm.

Georg is a founding member of the association of antitrust lawyers in the wider Frankfurt region (Kartellrechtsforum Frankfurt am Main).

In addition to his native German, he is fluent in English.
