Amir Cameron Tayrani is a partner in Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher's Washington D.C. office.  He practices in the firm's Litigation Department and is a member of the Appellate and Constitutional Law Practice Group.

Mr. Tayrani has significant experience representing clients before the Supreme Court of the United States and other appellate courts.

Representative matters include:

  • Citizens United v. FEC, 130 S. Ct. 876 (2010):  Successful merits briefing in a landmark campaign-finance decision recognizing the First Amendment right of corporations to make expenditures in support of political candidates.
  • Caperton v. A.T. Massey Coal Co., 129 S. Ct. 2252 (2009):  Successful petition for a writ of certiorari and merits briefing in a case holding that the Due Process Clause requires the recusal of elected judges who have received extraordinary levels of campaign support from litigants.
  • Allison Engine Co. v. United States ex rel. Sanders, 553 U.S. 662 (2008):  Successful petition for a writ of certiorari and merits briefing in a case holding that the False Claims Act does not extend to alleged fraud against federally funded private parties.
  • Riegel v. Medtronic, Inc., 552 U.S. 312 (2008):  Successful merits briefing in a case holding that federal law preempts state-law products liability claims regarding FDA-approved medical devices.  
  • Leegin Creative Leather Products, Inc. v. PSKS, Inc., 551 U.S. 877 (2007):  Successful stay application, petition for a writ of certiorari, and merits briefing in a case overturning a ninety-six-year-old antitrust precedent.

Mr. Tayrani also has an active trial practice.  He has defended clients against products liability claims in state court, and was part of the trial team that challenged the constitutionality of Proposition 8, a California ballot initiative that prohibits marriage by individuals of the same sex.

Mr. Tayrani graduated from the Yale Law School in 2003, where he was Executive Editor of The Yale Law Journal.  He served as a judicial clerk to the Honorable Diarmuid F. O'Scannlain of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit from 2004 to 2005.  Mr. Tayrani earned a B.A. degree summa cum laude in Political Science from California State University, Fullerton.  He is licensed to practice in California and the District of Columbia, and before the Supreme Court of the United States and the United States Courts of Appeals for the Fifth, Sixth, Seventh, Ninth, D.C., and Federal Circuits.
