John C. Cook is an associate in the Washington, D.C. office of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher. He currently practices in the firm's Labor & Employment Department.
Mr. Cook’s practice focuses in two areas.
First, Mr. Cook is involved in representing employers with respect to employee benefits and compensation matters under the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (“ERISA”). Among other things, he has assisted employers in applying for and obtaining prohibited transaction exemptions and advisory opinions from the Department of Labor with respect to their benefit plans. He also is involved in advising employers with respect to their compliance or alleged noncompliance with labor and employment laws, including particularly the Occupational Safety and Health Act (“OSH Act”), as well as the Americans with Disabilities Act (“ADA”) and the National Labor Relations Act (“NLRA”) and in understanding the impact of and commenting on proposed regulations promulgated under such laws.
Second, Mr. Cook is engaged in counseling accounting firms with respect to their regulatory compliance efforts. In particular, he has advised firms with respect to their obligations under the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (“SOX”) and the rules of the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (“PCAOB”) and equivalent foreign regulators. He has also represented firms in the context of investigations and enforcement proceedings by the Securities and Exchange Commission (“SEC”) and the PCAOB.
Mr. Cook received his law degree cum laude from Harvard Law School, where he served as Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Law & Public Policy. Before attending law school, Mr. Cook graduated magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa from Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service with a Bachelors of Science in Foreign Service.
Mr. Cook is a member of the bars of the Commonwealth of Virginia and the District of Columbia. He is also admitted to practice in the Eastern District of Virginia.
