The American Lawyer
– Litigation Department of the Year 2012
The American Lawyer has once again named Gibson Dunn the winner of its sixth biennial “Litigation Department of the Year” competition.  This honor represents a back-to-back win for Gibson Dunn and marks the first time a law firm has won the competition twice.  In selecting Gibson Dunn as the “Litigation Department of the Year,” The American Lawyer recognized the firm’s “stack of victories in some of the country’s thorniest cases” and noted the “brains, bench strength, and bravado” of its litigators. The magazine also named Gibson Dunn as the winner in the Labor and Employment category and named Theodore B. Olson as one of the five finalists for “Litigator of the Year.”  The firm is profiled in the January 2012 issue.

The American Lawyer A-List  
Gibson Dunn is ranked fourth on The American Lawyer’s most prestigious survey, the A-List.  The list ranks 20 of “the nation’s elite law firms” based on four factors: revenue per lawyer, pro bono commitment, diversity among lawyers and associate satisfaction.  This is Gibson Dunn’s seventh consecutive appearance on the list.  The A-List appears in the July/August 2012 issue.

Corporate Board Member – America’s Best Corporate Law Firms  
Corporate Board Member magazine and the global business advisory firm FTI Consulting, Inc. ranked Gibson Dunn in their annual America’s Best Corporate Law Firms study, “a comprehensive ranking by U.S. corporate directors and general counsel of the top 25 corporate law firms.”  The firm ranked 5th on the top 25 national corporate law firms list as determined by general counsels and 11th on the list determined by corporate directors of U.S. publicly traded companies.  The rankings are featured in the second quarter 2013 issue of the magazine.

Law360 – Global 20
Gibson Dunn ranked 14th on Law360’s Global 20, a list of “the 20 law firms with the greatest global reach and expertise.”   Rankings were based on six factors: number of countries in which the firm has offices, number of offices outside the firm’s home country, percentage of lawyers working outside the firm’s home country, scope of the firm’s international work, size and complexity of cross-border work and how pioneering the firm has been in its international efforts.  The profile of the firm was published on June 19, 2012.

National Law Journal – Pro Bono Hot List
Gibson Dunn was one of 10 law firms featured on National Law Journal’s 2012 Pro Bono Hot List, recognized for its work on Barrera v. Boughton, a suit filed in Connecticut district court on behalf of eight day laborers who were wrongly arrested by Danbury, Connecticut police in 2006, that was led by New York partner Joel Cohen.  A profile of the case ran in the January 2, 2012 issue.

Law360 – Pro Bono Firms of the Year
Law360 has named Gibson Dunn to its list of Pro Bono Firms of 2012, which features 20 “exceptional law firms … that committed a significant number of attorney hours and secured major victories.”  The list was published on August 17, 2012.  An article on the Firm’s pro bono work was published on August 29, 2012.

Women in Law Empowerment Forum Gold Standard Certification Award
Gibson Dunn has earned the Women in Law Empowerment Forum’s Gold Standard Certification Award.  The certification is given to law firms where women are integrated into the highest leadership positions.  In order for firms to qualify, “women must represent a meaningful percentage of their equity partners, of their highest leadership positions, of their governance and compensation committees, and of their most highly compensated partners.” 


Chambers and Partners
In its 2012 edition, Chambers USA: America's Leading Lawyers for Business awarded Gibson Dunn 56 first-tier rankings, of which 14 were firm practice group rankings, and 42 were individual lawyer rankings.  Overall, the firm earned 222 rankings - 63 firm practice group rankings and 159 individual lawyer rankings.

Chambers Global 2013 recognized Gibson Dunn with 26 firm rankings and 79 individual rankings globally, regionally in Latin America and the Middle East, and in Belgium, Brazil, Brunei, China, France, Germany, Greece, India, Mongolia, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, the United States.  The 2013 edition of Chambers UK recognized Gibson Dunn with nine individual rankings and five firm rankings.   Gibson Dunn earned five firm rankings and seven individual rankings in the 2013 edition of Chambers Asia Pacific. 
Chambers Europe 2012 awarded Gibson Dunn 18 rankings: 11 individual rankings and seven practice group rankings.

Legal 500
Gibson Dunn received 40 practice category rankings, including six top-tier rankings, in the 2012 edition of the Legal 500 – United States, and 12 partners were recognized as Leading Lawyers in their respective practices.  The UK Legal 500 2012 recognized Gibson Dunn in 13 practice areas and named four partners as Leading Lawyers.  The Legal 500 EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) 2012 recognized the firm in 12 categories in Belgium, France, Germany and UAE, and recommended 15 Gibson Dunn attorneys in their respective practice areas, with some listed in more than one category.  The Legal 500 – Asia Pacific recognized Gibson Dunn's Singapore office in five categories in its 2013 edition.

International Financial Law Review IFLR 1000
The 2012 edition of IFLR1000, a guide to the world’s leading financial law firms, recognized Gibson Dunn in six U.S. categories: Capital Markets – Debt and Equity; Capital Markets – High Yield Debt; Investment Funds: Private Equity – Fund Formation; Mergers and Acquisitions; Private Equity – Transactions; and Restructuring and Insolvency.  The firm was also recommended in six international categories:  Brazil – International Firms in Brazil; Germany – Mergers and Acquisitions; Singapore – Capital Markets: Foreign Firms; Singapore – Restructuring and Insolvency: Foreign Firms; United Arab Emirates – Financial and Corporate; and Western Europe and Central and Eastern Europe – EU Competition.   

U.S. News Media Group and Best Lawyers – Law Firm of the Year and Best Law Firms Survey
The U.S. News Media Group and Best Lawyers awarded Gibson Dunn 110 top-tier practice area rankings in their 2013 Best Law Firms survey.  Overall, the firm earned 139 rankings in seven states/metropolitan areas and nationally.  The rankings were based on surveys regarding law firm “expertise, responsiveness, understanding of a business and its needs, cost-effectiveness, civility, and whether they would refer another client to the firm.”  The national first-tier rankings will be featured in the U.S. News & World Report's special Money issue, published on November 20, 2012.

In addition, Gibson Dunn was named as Law Firm of the Year in two categories: Litigation – Antitrust and Criminal Defense: White-Collar – Governmental Investigations.  Only one law firm was recognized in each national legal practice area. 

Best Lawyers in America and Best Lawyers International
The Best Lawyers in America® 2013 recognized 141 Gibson Dunn partners as leading lawyers in 46 practice areas. Best Lawyers is based on a peer-review survey in which more than 36,000 leading attorneys cast almost 4.4 million votes on the legal abilities of other lawyers in their practice areas.
Best Lawyers also recognized 15 Gibson Dunn partners as leading lawyers in 18 practice areas in Belgium, France, Germany, Singapore and the UK.

Institutional Investor Benchmark Litigation and Benchmark Appellate 
In the 2013 edition of Benchmark Litigation, Gibson Dunn was recognized in seven national litigation practice areas and earned the publication’s highest recommendations for the firm’s litigation practices in California, New York and Washington, D.C.  The publication also named 24 partners as Litigation Stars and seven Future Stars. 

Benchmark Appellate recognized the firm’s appellate practice, giving it its top recommendation in five regional categories.  In addition to the firm rankings, seven partners were named Appellate Litigation Stars.

Daily Journal  Top Verdicts
The Daily Journal recognized two Gibson Dunn cases in its annual feature on top plaintiffs’ and defense verdicts in California.  Garamendi v. Artemis, in which a jury returned a complete defense verdict for Gibson Dunn client Artemis S.A. in a long-running insurance fraud action brought by the California Insurance Commissioner more than 13 years ago, was recognized as a Top Defense Verdict of 2012. Hewlett-Packard Co. v. Oracle Corp., where the firm won a complete victory for client Hewlett-Packard on claims of breach of contract and unfair competition tried against Oracle, was named one of the Top Plaintiffs’ Verdicts by Impact of 2012.  The Top Verdicts of 2012 supplement was published on February 13, 2013.

Who's Who Legal – Who's Who Legal 100
Who’s Who Legal has listed Gibson Dunn in the Who’s Who Legal 100 2012, the inaugural edition of the directory, which features the world’s 100 leading law firms.  Inclusion in the publication is based on several factors: the total number of lawyers listed in the Who’s Who Legal series The International Who’s Who 2012; the total number of practice areas in which the firm is listed in the series; the total number of jurisdictions in which the firm has a presence; and the number of recommended lawyers per jurisdiction.  This year, 55 Gibson Dunn partners were recommended in the series in 16 practice areas, including: Arbitration, Banking, Business Crime, Competition, Construction, Corporate Governance, Environment, Labor & Employment, Litigation, M&A, Private Funds, Product Liability, Public Procurement, Real Estate, Regulatory Communications and Trade. 

PRACTICE GROUP ACCOLADES

Law360 – Practice Groups of the Year
Law360 selected Gibson Dunn among its top five Practice Groups of the Year in four categories: Class Action, Competition, Employment and Privacy & Consumer Protection.  Winning firms were chosen based on “the significance of the litigation wins or deals worked on; the size and complexity of the litigation wins or deals worked on; and the number of significant, large or complex deals the group worked on or lawsuits the group won.”  The list was published on January 1, 2013, and firm profiles were published in the following weeks.

Global Competition Review – Global Elite and GCR 100
Gibson Dunn’s antitrust practice was ranked 8th in the 2013 edition of Global Competition Review'sGCR100 – Global Elite, a list of the top 20 antitrust practices in the world. The Global Elite ranking is based on several factors, including size of the practice, number of lawyers listed in The International Who's Who of Competition Lawyers and Economists and stability of the practice, as measured by hires and departures. The firm was also ranked as an Elite firm in the United States: California section, a Highly Recommended firm in the United States: Government Antitrust and United States: New York categories, a Recommended firm in Brussels, and was listed among the top practices in the United States: Texas section.

National Law Journal – IP Hot List
The National Law Journal ranked Gibson Dunn as one of the top intellectual property practices nationally in its 2013 Intellectual Property Hot List.  Gibson Dunn was recognized for its success handling high-stakes litigation.  The Intellectual Property Hot List recognized 20 law firms “that have demonstrated creative, formidable talent in litigation, patent prosecution and deal-making.”  The feature appears in the May 6, 2013 issue.

National Law Journal – Appellate Hot List
The National Law Journal featured Gibson Dunn in its 2012 Appellate Hot List, which recognized 16 firms handling the “most exemplary, cutting-edge advocacy” in the country’s appellate courts.  The firm was recognized for cases that include its representation of Walmart and Janus Capital before the U.S. Supreme court, and for its work challenging the constitutionality of the California proposition banning gay marriage.  The Appellate Hot List was published on June 18, 2012.

The Recorder – Top Appellate Practices
The Recorder has named Gibson Dunn to its list of Top Appellate Practices in California.  Gibson Dunn is one of nine firms on the list.  The firms were selected by the Recorder based on recent notable wins and canvassing the California appellate bar.  Gibson Dunn’s appellate practice was featured for its representation of Wal-Mart in the Dukes case, where the Supreme Court reversed class certification in the largest Title VII class action in history and for successfully arguing before the Ninth Circuit that California’s Proposition 8, which bans gay marriage, is unconstitutional.  The feature appears in the July 9, 2012 issue.

Asian Legal Business – Middle East Investment Fund Law Firm of the Year
Asian Legal Business named Gibson Dunn the Middle East Investment Fund Law Firm of the Year at the 2012 The Brief: Middle East Law Awards.  The annual awards recognize “the excellence and outstanding achievements of the region’s leading law firms.” 

Asian-MENA Counsel – Deals of the Year
Asian-Mena Counsel magazine has named two Gibson Dunn matters among its annual list of Deals of the Year.  “PT Mobile-8 Telecom Tbk: restructuring of guaranteed secured notes due 2012,” was noted as “ground-breaking for its size, complexity and innovation.”  Also featured was the “Harbin Electric take private,” noted as the “largest successful going private transaction to date,” winning recognition for its “complexity and uniqueness.”  The special report was published in Volume 10 Issue 1, 2012.

LAWYER ACCOLADES 

National Law Journal – 100 Most Influential Lawyers in America

Los Angeles partner Theodore Boutrous, New York partner Randy Mastro and Washington, D.C. partner Theodore Olson were named to The National Law Journal’s “100 Most Influential Lawyers in America” list, which recognized “100 lawyers in the United States who have shaped the legal world through their work in the courtroom, at the negotiating table, in the classroom or in government.”  To determine the list, the publication focused on accomplishments within the past five years and judged each lawyer’s influence based on five qualities: political clout, legal results, media penetration, business credibility and thought leadership. The list of honorees was published on March 25, 2013.

National Law Journal – Champions & Visionaries
Washington, DC partners Theodore Olson and Eugene Scalia were named to the National Law Journal’s Champions & Visionaries list.  Olson was named to the list of Champions, which included 20 attorneys “who have upheld the profession’s core values through public service, pro bono work and advocacy for civil liberties.”  Scalia was one of 20 lawyers named to the Visionaries list, which acknowledged those “whose business foresight or legal acumen has expanded their firms, advanced the law or improved government.”  Champions & Visionaries were announced in the July 9, 2012 issue.

The American Lawyer –  Dealmakers of 2012
The American Lawyer magazine featured New York partner Lois Herzeca as one of its Dealmakers of the Year 2012, which profiled 12 lawyers “who played critical roles in last year’s most notable transactions.”  Herzeca was recognized her representation of Transatlantic Holdings, which ultimately merged with Alleghany Corporation.   The article was published in the April 2012 issue.


Law360  2012 MVPs
Law360 has named seven Gibson Dunn partners among its 2012 MVPs. The MVPs were selected from hundreds of nominations, and Gibson Dunn had more attorneys listed than any other firm. The firm’s MVPs are Ashlie Beringer for Privacy, Josh Krevitt for Intellectual Property, Karen Manos for Government Contracts, Tomer Pinkusiewicz for Project Finance, Eugene Scalia for Securities, Jason Schwartz for Employment and Orin Snyder for Media & Entertainment. The list was published on November 30, 2012, and individual MVPs were profiled in the following weeks.

Best Lawyers – Lawyer of the Year
Best Lawyers named the following Gibson Dunn partners as the 2013 Lawyer of the Year in their respective practice areas and cities:  George Curtis - Denver Securities Regulation Lawyer of the Year; John Olson - Washington, D.C. Corporate Law Lawyer of the Year; M. Sean Royall - Dallas Antitrust Law Lawyer of the Year; Gary Spratling - San Francisco Antitrust Law Lawyer of the Year; Daniel Swanson - Los Angeles Antitrust Law Lawyer of the Year; and William Wegner - Los Angeles Product Liability Litigation - Defendants Lawyer of the Year.  The lawyers that were selected received particularly high ratings in Best Lawyers' survey by earning a high level of respect among their peers for their abilities, professionalism, and integrity.  Only one lawyer in each legal community is selected as the Lawyer of the Year for each practice area.

National Association of Corporate Directors – NACD Directorship 100
The National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD) named Washington, D.C. partners Amy Goodman and John Olson to its 2012 NACD Directorship 100, a list of the “most influential people in the boardroom and corporate governance community.”  The list was published in the November/December 2012 issue of NACD Directorship magazine.

BTI Consulting – Client Service All-Stars
BTI Consulting named Washington, D.C. partner Thomas Dupree and New York partner John Herfort to its 2013 BTI Client Service All-Stars list.  The All-Stars list features lawyers “identified solely through client feedback” as “standing out with corporate counsel as delivering the highest levels of client service.”  In addition, BTI recognized Herfort as a Client Service All-Star 2-Year MVP for being listed for two consecutive years.

Daily Journal – California's Top 100 Lawyers
The Daily Journal named Ashlie Beringer, Theodore Boutrous and Ruth Fisher to its annual list of the “Top 100 Lawyers in California.”  The list was published in the September 12, 2012 issue.

The Times – Law 100
The Times has named Charles Falconer to The Times Law 100 2012, its annual list of the 100 most influential lawyers in the United Kingdom. The lawyers were selected by a panel of 12 judges drawn from politics, the judiciary, academia, the media and the law. The list appears in the March 15, 2012 issue.

Daily Journal
Top Women Lawyers  
The Daily Journal has named partners Ashlie Beringer, Catherine Conway, Ruth Fisher, Kay Kochenderfer, Marjorie Lewis and Debra Wong Yang to its list of Top Women Lawyers.  All four are profiled in the May 9, 2012 issue of the Daily Journal.

California Lawyer – CLAY Awards
California Lawyer featured partner Theodore Boutrous as an honoree in its 2012 California Lawyer Attorneys of the Year Awards.  Boutrous was honored for his work on behalf of Wal-Mart before the U.S. Supreme Court, which unanimously reversed class certification in the largest employment class action in history in June.  The CLAY Awards were published in the magazine’s March 2012 issue.

Treasury and Risk Magazine – 100 Most Influential People in Finance
Michael Bopp has been named to Treasury and Risk Magazine’s list of the 100 Most Influential People in Finance.  Bopp was recognized in the category of Rulemakers and Lobbyists for his “skillful leadership of the coalition of trade associations representing corporate end users of OTC derivatives,” which has allowed the group to “box above its weight in the debate about regulating such derivatives.” The list was published on June 18, 2012.

Law360 – Rising Stars
Law360 named six Gibson Dunn lawyers among its Rising Stars for 2013, which honors “attorneys under 40 whose legal accomplishments belie their age.”  Of the nearly 1,000 nominees who submitted across 23 practices areas, the following Gibson Dunn attorneys were recognized: Los Angeles partner Theane Evangelis Kapur in Appellate; New York partner Brian Lutz in Securities; Los Angeles of counsel Jesse Shapiro in Real Estate; Washington, DC partner Geoffrey Sigler in Insurance; Washington, DC of counsel Steven Tave in Life Sciences; and New York of counsel Avi Weitzman in White Collar. The list of Rising Stars was published on March 11, 2013 and the attorney profiles were published in the following weeks.

The Recorder – Fast Track
The Recorder has named Lindsey Blenkhorn and Matthew Kahn in the firm’s San Francisco office and Matthew Hoffman and Perlette Michèle Jura in the firm’s Los Angeles office to its 2013 Lawyers on the Fast Track list. The list features 50 California attorneys in their first 10 years out of law school “whose early accomplishments indicate they will be tomorrow's top lawyers and leaders.” Attorneys were selected based on their career accomplishments and leadership roles within their firms, practices and communities.  Honorees will be profiled in a special edition of The Recorder published on June 24, 2013.

Daily Journal – Top 20 Under 40
The Daily Journal named Los Angeles partner Theane Evangelis Kapur to its annual list of the Top 20 California Attorneys Under 40.  Kapur was selected for her work on the constitutional challenge to Proposition 8, California’s ban on same-sex marriage. The publication also highlighted her representations of plaintiffs in the constitutional challenge of California’s teacher tenure laws and Hewlett-Packard in a putative nationwide class action.  Kapur’s profile was published in the Daily Journal on February 27, 2013.

San Francisco Business Times – Forty Under 40
The San Francisco Business Times named San Francisco partner Chip Nierlich to its “Forty Under 40” list.  The annual feature recognizes “the most influential young leaders across the spectrum of Bay Area businesses.”  Nierlich’s profile was published on March 1, 2013.

Crain's New York Business – 40 Under 40
Crain’s New York Business named New York partner Aric Wu to its “40 Under 40,” an annual list of “40 of New York’s most ambitious young achievers.”  The honorees, who were selected from nearly 700 nominations,  “share an intense passion about their careers, they are tireless cheerleaders for their industries, and they pursue their goals with tenacity.”  The list and a profile of Aric Wu were published on March 26, 2012.


Variety – Hollywood's New Leaders
Variety featured partners Ari Lanin and Stephen Tsoneff on its Hollywood’s New Leaders List for 2012.  The list featured seven attorneys under the age of 36 considered to be emerging entertainment industry leaders.  The feature appeared in the October 29, 2012 edition.

Variety – Legal Impact Report
New York partner Orin Snyder was recognized in Variety’s 2013 Legal Impact Report, an annual feature on the top 50 attorneys in the entertainment industry, including the litigators who “helped shape the face of entertainment.”  Variety published the report on April 16, 2013.

Hollywood Reporter Power Lawyers
The Hollywood Reporter named Scott Edelman, Ruth Fisher, Orin Snyder and Lawrence Ulman to its 2012 Power Lawyers List, which features 100 of the entertainment industry’s most influential lawyers.  In selecting the list, The Hollywood Reporter reviewed the biggest cases and deals from the past year and selected attorneys based on cases and deals handled, in addition to their reputation within the entertainment legal community.  The list appeared in the July 18, 2012 issue.

Human Resource Executive / Lawdragon Most Powerful Employment Lawyers
Washington, DC partners Baruch Fellner, William Kilberg and Eugene Scalia were named among the 100 Most Powerful Employment Lawyers in the nation
by Human Resource Executive magazine and Lawdragon, an online legal publication and directory.  Palo Alto partner Steven Fackler was included in the list of the Top 20 Most Powerful Attorneys for Employee Benefits and ERISA.  The lists were featured in the June 16, 2012 issue of Human Resource Executive magazine.

Daily Journal – Top IP Lawyers
The Daily Journal named Century City partner Wayne Barsky and Palo Alto partner Mark Lyon to its Top Intellectual Property Litigators list.  The annual feature recognizes 75 California-based attorneys “whose work has advanced the law and technology innovation in important and possibly long-lasting ways.”  The list was published in the April 17, 2013 issue.

Daily Journal Top Labor and Employment Lawyers
Los Angeles partner Catherine Conway is featured in the Daily Journal’s Top 75 Labor and Employment Attorneys in California list.  The issue was published on July 18, 2012.

Daily Journal – Top Real Estate Lawyers in California
The Daily Journal has named San Francisco partner Mary Murphy to its list of the Top 30 Real Estate Attorneys in California, which features lawyers who are “continuing to make their mark on the industry.” The list was published on August 15, 2012.

Los Angeles Business Journal – Who's Who in Intellectual Property Law
The Los Angeles Business Journal has named partners Wayne Barsky and Jason Lo to its 2012 list of Who’s Who in Intellectual Property Law.  The list features 40 “stellar IP attorneys in Los Angeles.”  The issue was published on October 29, 2012.

LMG Life Sciences – Life Sciences Stars 
Partners Wayne Barsky, Stephen Payne and Daniel Thomasch were named Life Sciences Stars in the inaugural edition of LMG Life Sciences 2012, a supplement to Managing Intellectual Property magazineBarsky was listed as a star in the Intellectual Property category, and Payne and Thomasch were named in the Non-IP Litigation and Enforcement category.
