Richard Roeder is an of counsel in the Munich office of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher. He is a member of the firm’s International Trade, White Collar Defense and Investigations and Anti-Corruption & FCPA Practice Groups.
Mr. Roeder focuses on international trade compliance and white collar investigations, as well as transactional regulatory risk assessments and advises clients from various industries in the areas of sanctions, anti-money-laundering and anti-corruption compliance. His clients include in particular banks and insurance companies as well as companies from the automotive, mining, oil and gas, healthcare and information technology sectors.
In 2018, Mr. Roeder was seconded to our Washington, D.C. office where he worked with our U.S. sanctions and export control team and specifically assisted our clients in managing the challenges posed by the divergence between U.S. and EU economic and financial sanctions (e.g. regarding the EU Blocking Statute).

Mr. Roeder regularly publishes on legal matters, specifically regarding developments in financial and economic sanctions, export control and natural resources investment law. Amongst others, together with Washington, D.C. partner Adam Smith and of counsel Stephanie Connor, he is the author of “U.S., EU, and UN Sanctions: Navigating the Divide for International Business” (2019) and the author of “Foreign Mining Investment Law” (2016) as well as co-author of International Comparative Legal Guide to Sanctions (2021).
Prior to joining Gibson Dunn, Mr. Roeder was a fellow of what today is called the Mercator Fellowship on International Affairs, working for the German Ministry of Economics, the German Foreign Service, the European Union and the United Nations Development Program. From 2008-2010, he was a trainee at a renowned British/German law firm in Munich and Moscow. From 2013 onwards, he worked as an associate with the White Collar Defense and Investigations and Corporate/M&A Practice Groups of a renowned international law firm in Munich, specifically focusing on sanction compliance.
